NTU EEE Alumni Association President’s Report for the Year 2015/2016

August 27, 2016 Saturday

To: Members of NTU EEE Alumni Association (EEEAA)

"Citius, Altius, Fortius"

What is the similarity between NTU EEE Alumni Association (EEEAA) and the Olympic?

Yes, EEEAA live up to the Olympic motto of "Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger)."

Last year, we experienced our first major failure since the revival of EEEAA in 2009. If you have been with us since then, you will know what I mean. In 2010, our AGM was done at the Imperial Cheng Ho Cruise, attended by over 100 EEE Alumni, family & friends. In 2011, again we hit more than 100 pax at the AGM & F1 Dinner at Sichuan Douhua Restaurant. In 2012, when Gardens by the Bay has just opened, we moved our meeting there followed by a tour of the Domes, again attracted more than 100 pax. In 2013, we repeated the AGM & F1 Dinner with the same degree of success. In 2014, we had our AGM at Beanstro at Suntec City, combined with a visit to the newly opened Alive Musuem & photo competition with about 80 pax participating. However, in 2015, there were less than 20 pax for the AGM. The initial plan of targeting 80 pax to go on a yacht for AGM failed to attract the targetted number (in fact, only 4 members sign up excluding the exco members). We have to cancel the event and shifted the meeting to the Spinelli at HarbourFront Centre.

We felt that we let ourselves and our members down. We were disappointed that the initial plan failed to materialise due to various reasons. We reflected deeply, went through all the possible reasons why this happened and promised ourselves not to let this happened again. Although we were disappointed & down last year, we did not allow that to dampen our spirit. Instead, we used that as our learning points & motivation and bounced back even Faster, Higher & Stronger. Looking back EEEAA activities for the past one year, it was the most prolific, innovative and impactful year since 2009.

Immediately after the AGM in September 2015, EEEAA co-organised the TEDxNTU conference together with Graduate Students Council at Nanyang Auditorium during NTU Alumni Homecoming day on 17 October 2015, attended by over 1,500 people. In March 2016, we witnessed the most successful EEEAA Quarterly Chillout ever, with rich & meaningful interactions among the 40 over participants. In May 2016, we provided another fantastic show with high level of competition and entertainment in our longest running event - The 5th Edition of The E3Spirit Cup - 5-aside Soccer Competition. In August 2016, we brought 123 EEE Alumni, family, friends, students & staffs for the 1-Day Johor Durian Tour.

This year, we decided to give this idea of holding our AGM on yachts a try again & changed our strategies. We managed to innovate by using technology to make meeting possible on 4 yachts and cut down the cost of renting a venue for meeting. We passed down the cost savings to our EEE Alumni and the sign up rate has been overwhelming right from the start. Now, you are on the yachts & we have once again hit about 100 pax participants. That's truly an Olympic spirit: Faster, Higher, Stronger.

Last but not least, all these would not have been possible without the hard work of each and every single exco members. I would like to thank everyone who have contributed their time and effort, making personal sacrifices to serve our alumni community. Of course, most importantly, what's the meaning of serving if there's no beneficiaries? Your support is what make our work meaningful & fulfilling. On behalf of the whole exco, I would like to thank you for your support over the years. We will continue to work hard, innovate and value-add to all EEE Alumni.

Thank you and all the best!
